President’s Message
January 2018

I can’t think of a better way to start 2018 than with the AIA Pasadena & Foothill Design Awards Gala. Celebrating creative architecture and exceptional design with friends and colleagues reminded me why I love being part of the profession. This year we had a great event and it reminded me also why I love being part of the AIAPF Chapter. Our Chapter is full of members committed to the profession and committed to making our world a more beautiful, better place and I am honored to be this year’s President.

Our Board of Directors has planned some great programs for 2018 that address current industry topics and emerging issues. Program topics will include Net-Zero Energy for Residential Construction, Energy Modeling, Government Advocacy, Community Involvement and Alternative Construction Delivery methods. Keep your eyes on the AIAPF Calendar of Events because you don’t want to miss any of them!

One of my goals this year is to engage with architects who have chosen alternative careers – Construction Management, Government, Higher Education, Manufacturer, Owner’s Representative – to promote the benefits of AIA membership. Our Emerging Professionals committee plans to conduct panel discussions that highlight these alternatives, make both young and experienced members aware of additional opportunities within the industry and discuss how AIA membership can add value across the profession.

In addition, many popular programs will continue - Friday Forum, RestauranTours, Birdhouse Competition (now in its fifth year!), social events and the 2018 Awards Gala next January – it’s not too early to start planning! There are also plans in the works for another ADA Seminar and Business Development Boot Camp. And get ready Pasadena & Foothills! To celebrate AIAPF’s 70th Anniversary, we’re bringing back Get on the Bus in August with a tour of significant architectural treasures within Chapter boundaries.

AIAPF has a 70-year-old tradition of offering rich programming, celebrating design and promoting architecture within our collective communities. As part of that tradition, let’s strive to inspire members to greater things, inspire members to greater advocacy and inspire members to greater participation. We can only affect the change we want in our industry with an inspired, engaged and vocal membership. It takes all of us.

Speak up. Get involved. Use your power to inspire.

Let’s have a great year!

Sincerely,

Carol Lanham, AIA

2018 Chapter President
