Architectural Registration Exam - ARE

  • ARE is a series of licensing exams that must be passed in order to become a licensed architect.
  • Supervised by NCARB – National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
  • To start taking the ARE in California, must have 5 years of education, or the equivalent work experience. BArch = 5 years and BS/BA = 3.5 years experience.
  • This experience is verified by CAB, who issues a statement of eligibility and an authorizing number that can then be used to sign up for tests through Prometric.
  • The exam sections can be taken in any order, at any time of the year as they are proctored through a national test taking company, through whom all test taking arrangements are made once eligible.
  • A 5-year Rolling Clock applies starting from the time you pass your first section of the exam until you must pass the last exam. (CSE/Oral not included).
  • Chapter ARE lectures start March 12, 2016; this will be a series of eight sessions.
