Not Everyone is Lucky Enough to Have A Julia Morgan Building!

California architect Julia Morgan designed a number of excellent, and now historically valuable, institutional buildings in her career. One of these is the YWCA Building at Marengo and Holly in Pasadena, built in 1921-22.
The Y left the building in 1997. The present Owner is nearly incommunicado; the building is apparently being left to deteriorate, and no adaptive reuse proposal has been satisfactory from a preservation standpoint.
Two issues will be disscussed:
The preservation and reuse of the building itself, within the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Some past proposals, ranging from luxury condos to a boutique hotel, have proposed drastically out-of-scale and out-of-context additions.
The building’s placement in the Pasadena Civic Center’s City Beautiful plan.
