Scholarships

The Chapter has always been committed to nurturing young architects and providing them with the skills to succeed, as well as to be creative and responsible members of the profession. Through providing relevant programming we strive to instill in them the desire for true design excellence and to fuel their passion for architecture.

Additionally the Chapter has for many years reached out to educational institutions and collaborated with their leaders in providing scholarships to their students. The Chapter administers two scholarships, the Jean Roth Driskol Scholarship (matched by an equal grant for National AIA) and the Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship.

The Jean Roth Driskel Scholarship Awards

In 1971, The JRD Scholarship was established in the name of the first woman Chapter President, Jean Roth Driskel, FAIA, to honor her great love for and dedication to the profession of architecture.

The JRD scholarships are annually awarded to two students: one a Community College student and one a University student in recognition of their dedication, enthusiasm and ability in the field of architecture. Nominated by their schools, the Community College student candidate must have been accepted to a university level architectural program offering a four or five-year degree. The university student candidate must be in their third, fourth or fifth year of undergraduate architectural study.

Since April 1990, the funds for this scholarship program have been held and administered by the California Community Foundation (CCF), an established and well-respected 501 C-3 organization (www.calfund.org). In 2006 the AIA National Organization has supplied a matching grant, making it possible to award each student a $4000 scholarship.

The winning student is the Chapter’s guest at either the Installation Gala or Annual Summer Social at the Gamble House and s/he is recognized in a printed and online issue of The Bulletin, the Chapter’s monthly publication.

The California Architectural Foundation is the link between the profession and academia. By enhancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice through education and public awareness activities, the Foundation is making a positive difference in people's lives and the built and natural environments that surround them. All programs are funded through donations and contributions from architects, allied professionals, and other benevolent organizations.
