California's New Energy Code: Challenges and Opportunities

This course is designed to familiarize architects, engineers, building owners, and other project stakeholders with the available tools, resources, and methods to achieve significant energy savings beyond code requirements in the design of their buildings. Particular focus will be on strategies for increased building performance in light of the significant changes coming in the 2013 California Energy Standards (effective July 1st, 2014). Course includes an in-depth discussion of utility-sponsored incentive programs for new construction, approaches to modeling energy performance, and the principles of an Integrated Design Process.

Learning Objectives:
1. Navigate the envelope, mechanical, and lighting requirements of the new California state energy code.
2. Describe the trade-offs between performance-based energy modeling and prescriptive, systems component analysis.
3. Identify strategies for achieving better-than-code energy performance.
4. Engage statewide utility-sponsored incentive programs as a resource for high-performance building design.

Presenters

Dave Intner is a Licensed Architect, LEED AP, and Certified Energy Manager (CEM). A graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Dave works closely with the architectural and engineering community to help Southern California Edison’s customers design and construct energy efficient and sustainable buildings through the Savings by Design program. Dave helped found the USGBC's California Central Coast Chapter (C4), where he currently sits on the chapter Board of Directors, and he assists the development of LEED through the National USGBC as a member of the LEED Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group (EA-TAG). He is also the 2013-2014 Board President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Ventura County.

In 2011 she joined Southern California Edison as the engineer for the California Advanced Homes Program.

Kavita has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Manipal Institute of Technology in India and a Master of Building Science degree from the University of Southern California. She has been a speaker at the American Solar Energy Society national and world conferences and has had papers published at ASES. She has been a LEED Accredited Professional since 2005 and is a Certified Energy Plans Examiner through the California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC).
