In Memoriam Patrick Martin
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Patrick Martin, Board Member and fourth generation architect with AC Martin. After a long and courageous fight with cancer, surrounded by his family, Patrick passed away Tuesday morning at the home of his parents, Chris and Jeanette Martin. He was known for his dedication to family and friends, to his work, and to the firm - carrying on the legacy of his great-grandfather, Albert C. Martin, Sr. and his grandfather, J. Edward Martin - but most of all for his unfailing determination and generous spirit. Patrick was always thinking of others, and in a letter to the staff shortly before the holiday break, he asked that we "take this moment to be grateful for your own health and the health of your family; while at the same time, remembering all of those who fight disease and illness. Please continue to pray for all those in need, especially during the holidays." Those of us, who were lucky to have known and worked with him, will miss Patrick dearly. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Danielle, and their children, Thomas and William.
In lieu of flowers, charitable gifts can be made to the Patrick Martin Memorial Fund at the USC School of Architecture, c/o Dottie O'Carroll, Watt Hall 204, Los Angeles, California 90089-0291; or in memory of Patrick Martin to the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, www.cancer.ucla.edu/donate.
Changes to AIA Continuing Education Requirements
On Dec. 9, 2011, the AIA Board of Directors voted to modify the AIA’s calendar year continuing education requirements to maintain the professional life-long learning standard. These changes are to ensure that AIA members master new knowledge and skills to meet the changing requirements of the profession.
Beginning this year, AIA members will be required to complete 12 hours of HSW education annually; previously 8 HSW hours were required. The total number of continuing education hours required remains unchanged at 18 hours, which includes 4 hours of sustainable design (SD) education. The AIA Board will re-evaluate the SD requirement later this year.
