Ali Barar and John Byram both serve on the City of Pasadena the Design Commission.

The Design Commission reviews projects for the purpose of safeguarding and enhancing the visual aesthetic character, diversity and quality of projects within the City through encouraging design excellence.

The presentation will focus on concepts and policies used by the Commission and will highlight some recent changes to the submittal requirements to better facilitate the Commission’s charge. Included will be before and after examples of planning and design efforts submitted to the City and an analysis of their strengths and processes that led to successful passage through design review.

The discussion will conclude with a moderated question and answer session with Ali and John.

John Byram has over 25 years of architectural design, planning, production and construction administration experience.
He currently serves on the Design Commission and Urban Forestry Advisory Committee for the City of Pasadena.
John first came to Pasadena while working with the Center for Environmental Structure where he helped develop the City of Gardens Plan—the City’s first form based code. He has continued to provide urban design and planning consultation services to communities, recently assisting the City of Orange with illustrative guidelines.

Consistently recognized for design excellence, John is the recipient of many professional awards, including a Design Excellence Award from the AIA Central Arizona Chapter, a Design Merit Award from the AIA Los Angeles Chapter, a Cornerstone Excellence Award from the Southern California Concrete Association, a Creative Design Award from the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation and an Outstanding Restaurant Design Award from the James A. Beard Foundation.

His work has been published in Domus, Dwell, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Pasadena Star News.

John is a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies and has Masters in Architecture and City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley.

As Managing Principal of Gonzalez Goodale Architects since 2006, Ali Barar is a seasoned Project Manager who brings 25 years of community planning and architectural experience. Prior to joining Gonzalez Goodale Architects, Ali was the Vice President and Architectural Director of the Los Angeles Community Design Center (LA CDC), a non-profit architecture, planning and development corporation that provides a broad range of services to at-risk communities.

As a recognized leader in Southern California housing and community development, Ali has provided comprehensive architectural services and technical assistance to over 500 community groups for socially beneficial projects, including master plan and neighborhood planning, childcare centers, health clinics, senior and community centers, playgrounds, shelters for the homeless, streetscape and commercial façade improvements, commercial office space as well multi- family transitional and permanent supportive housing.

Ali holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of North Carolina and a Master’s of Architecture degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He currently Chairs the City of Pasadena’s Design Commission

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made at least one week prior to the event will be refunded, less a $10 cancellation and processing fee. No refunds for cancellations will be given after that time. No refunds shall be issued for no-shows. Registration may be transferred to another individual.” AIAPF reserves the right to cancel any event where the minimum number of pre-registration registrants is not met. If such a cancellation occurs, registrants will be notified and given the opportunity to select an alternate and comparable event to attend. In the event such an alternate and comparable class is not available, then the registration fees will be refunded as appropriate. Further, dates, times, classes, program subject matter, instructors, panelists and fees are subject to change, without notice, at any time at the sole and absolute discretion of AIAPF.
